| Cornwall
probably has a more diverse coastline than any other
coastal county in England and with a significant section
of the south-west coastal path at your disposal you
can experience as much, or as little of it, as you like,
but by any standard it offers so much more than simply
sea and sand.
In general, the stormy seas of the Atlantic
have carved the county’s north coast into wide
belts of golden sand and dunes – beautiful beaches
for families, like Porth Joke, some with exhilarating
swimming and surfing opportunities. Also characteristic
of the rugged north coast are the majestic cliffs and
jagged rocks that create spectacular scenery whilst
sheltering quiet harbours and fishing towns.
Cape Cornwall and Land’s End epitomise
the drama of the rocky coastline. This furthest corner
of England has been exposed to ever changing winds and
seas that have battered their imprint on the moor-type
land.
A short journey south to the Lizard Peninsula
brings about such a remarkable change in climate that
unique eco-systems have developed and there are species
of flora and fauna that cannot be found elsewhere. Still
kept fresh by some bracing winds, the influence of the
Gulf Stream is evident throughout this area and brings
many visitors. Kynance Cove is characteristic of the
Lizard – a sandy beach sheltered by towering cliffs.
The relative quiet of the waters of the
English Channel, together with the proximity of the
continent, means that the southern coast of Cornwall
is busy with coves and inlets related to marine commerce.
Fishing, mining, smuggling – industries that have
great historical significance to the county –
can all be followed throughout the coastal towns of
the south coast. A huge variety of pleasure craft are
the most common vessels on view these days but it is
easy to find the evidence of strong maritime communities.
With gems like the Minack Theatre
built into the rocks overlooking the turquoise water
of Porthcurno, you will find places to surprise and
delight you all around the Cornish. Whatever your interest
you will find somewhere to spend perfect holiday time.
